Today, on our 2015 Dodge Durango we’re going to be doing a test fit of the Rhino Rack, J hook style roof kayak carrier. It’s going to come with all the provided hardware that you need to strap down your kayak, including the J hooks, the main body straps, as well as the balance sure lines. First off . Let’s go ahead and start off by getting the balance sure lines undone and off the kayak. All right now, do the hook and loop strap, pull up the slack, press on the black button, and remove it. The nice thing about that hook and loop strap is it’s going to make it to where you can roll everything up and make it nice and neat and not have a bunch of cable just laying around. Now, on the front side you have a little bit different of a situation with the fenders, the plastic bumper, the fascia that there is no real place to anchor it down. You can anchor it on the inside of the engine compartment.

There’s a couple different ways you can do it. Here you’re going to be able to do it however you see fit and whatever is going to work best for you. There’s going to be a bolt here . Going to have it loose here just so you can see. There’s going to be a bolt there with that protector coat over the top and you can just place that there if you need to. All right, better undo it. Pull it all out of the way and remove it from the kayak.

Now we got both of those straps out of the way, let’s go ahead and close up our hood and undo our main body straps. Our main body straps are going to be hooking on the back side of the J hook up on the top and then wrapping over and underneath the crossbar. There’s going to be detailed instructions on how to do this with your kit that you get. Go ahead and remove the strap and pull it off the vehicle. Again, it does come with that nice hook and loop strap as well, so you roll it up and make it nice and neat for yourself and store it away. Now that we have all of the straps off, let’s go ahead and remove our kayak.

The easiest way to do it is going to be to grab it on both sides, rotate it back towards you, and have it upside down when you pull it off . Same way when you put it on, you’re just going to come in upside down, place the side here over the edge, and then roll it in. It’s going to be best if you have it making contact with all three pads, the one on the backside, the one on the bottom, and the one on the front. That way you have three points of contact securing your kayak to your vehicle. Once we have our kayak off and out of the way, let’s go ahead and talk about how the J hooks are attached to our factory cross rails. These will fit most all of your roof rack systems, whether that be your aero type, your elliptical, your square, round, or even your factory that we have here today.

So, you have two thumb screws and a fixed metal plate that goes through two bolts. Let’s go ahead and unthread this so you can see how it works. All right, once we have both the thumb screws undone we’re going to remove that fixed metal plate with the two holes drilled in it . Just like so and that will make it come off. Put it into place where you want it, place that metal bracket . The U is going to be towards the crossbar, just one side over the bolt, and then pull the other side up to follow it. Once you have both of those in place, go ahead and thread on the first wing nut until it meets the plate so you don’t have to hold it anymore, and then thread on the other side as well. Once you have both of those where you want them, go ahead and tie them down to secure it. Once you have the J hook nice and secure on top of the vehicle, you’re ready to hit the road with your all new Rhino rack, J hook style kayak carrier, part number S510 on our 2015 Dodge Durango.
