Speaker 1: Today on our 2009 Ram 1500 we’re going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite front-mount custom fit receiver hitch with the 2″ by 2″ opening, part number 65062. Now here’s what our hitch looks like installed. This is going to give us a perfect solution for . snow plows are very, very common, putting those up on the front of the vehicle, but also spare tire carriers. If you’re going to do some off-roading people like to do that. Even cargo carriers and bike racks, if you really need to maximize the capacity of your vehicle.

Also, these work out really, really well for winching. There are certain platforms designed for a winch to mount right into a Class 3 receiver hitch like we’ve got here with the 2″ by 2″ opening. Now this is going to give us a 9,000 pound straight line pull. That’s a really nice high capacity even on the larger quad cab here. I don’t think we’d have an issue getting ourselves pulled out. Now when holding our staff in place we’re going to use the 5/8 diameter pin hole.

It’s a little bit closer to the rear of the vehicle. You just want to be sure to use Class 3 accessories. There’s plenty of room there on each side. The slightly smaller hole that’s closer to the front will only be used with the j-pin stabilization system. You’ll see the rounded reinforcement collar here around the end gives it a nice clean look.

When it comes to tongue weight ratings or maximum downward force that we can put here at the receiver tube opening, we’re looking at 500 pounds. The gross trailer weight capacity would be 5,000 pounds if we we’re going to be moving a trailer around the yard or something like that. Those are all things to keep that in mind. Now when it comes to comparing this hitch to the other hitch available for the same application, this one gives us better ground clearance by about 3/4″. Our hitch pin hole, it’s 3″ out here closer to the outside edge of our bumper, which is going to be important so we don’t have to get down on the ground and try to get our things attached. It has higher tongue weight and trailer weight ratings, so it’s definitely the better of the two options currently available for the vehicle.

Something else that I like, we’ve got tow hooks or recovery hooks down here. Really nice, heavy duty material. We’ll be able to either, if we’re winching, use this for a secondary winch point if we needed to use a snatch block, or even for having our vehicle recovered out of a ditch or something like that. Those will be nice and convenient. Now a couple measurements that will be important for finding the appropriate accessory for your new hitch will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening we’re going to have about 10-1/2″. Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the front bumper is about 5″.Now with the help of an extra set of hands we’re going to get the hitch lifted up into position. We want to take the large bolts. You’ve see they’ve got the blue Loctite on them. Those are going to go right up into the factory weld nut locations. What we want to do is place a conical tooth washer on our bolt. We want the teeth of that washer to face up towards the hitch. Once we’ve got that one started, we’ll get our other one started. Now we’re just going to snug these bolts down a little bit.Now we’ll take a pointed punch. We want to mark the center of our hole location here. We do this on both sides. That will act as our guide for our bit as we drill out our holes. Now we’ll get our holes drilled out. Going to start with a 1/4″ bit and just work our way up to a 1/2″. We need to get our carriage bolts and our spacer blocks in place. Now these are going to go in through the frame rail through this oval-shaped hole. If you take a look, our spacer block’s just a little bit too big. Now in some applications these are going to fit right in. In some applications you will have to take out just a small notch there to allow it to pass. Now if you do need to take out a notch, we’re just going to use a rotary-style tool and get it cut out.You can see we’re just going to take out that small notch, allowing that spacer block to pass through freely. We’ll want to do that both the passenger and driver side if required. Then we touch it up with a little bit of rust-preventative paint just to protect those bare metals edges. Don’t want to have any rusting. Now to get our rear hardware in place we
