Applies to 1996-2000 models

Rating: Marginal

A 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan was crash tested on July 3, 1996 into a fixed deformable barrier at
40.0 mi/h (64.4 km/h) and a 40 percent overlap on the driver side. A Hybrid III 50th percentile
male dummy was positioned in the driver seat with the lap/shoulder belt fastened.

Measures of intrusion taken after the crash showed the lower instrument panel in front of the
dummy moved rearward 9 cm. The upper end of the steering column moved rearward
4 cm and upward 12 cm. Resultant intrusion in the driver footwell area measured 17 cm in the
area where a footrest would typically be located and 28-32 cm at other places on the toepan.
There was a 30 cm tear in the intruded toepan metal from the deformed left frame rail. The
driver door aperture shortened 5 cm as measured at the lower edge of the window. All doors
remained closed during the crash, and none required tools to open afterward.

The driver dummy was restrained by a three-point lap/shoulder belt and an airbag. Six cm of
webbing spooled off the retractor during the crash. The dummy’s face was not contacted by the
inflating airbag and loaded the fully inflated airbag centrally. As the steering column moved
upward, the dummy’s head/neck bent back sharply. Later during rebound, the dummy’s head
moved rearward and slightly outboard, contacting the shoulder belt webbing but missing nearby
hard surfaces.

The maximum head vector resultant acceleration was 71 g during head contact with the airbag;
the maximum resultant head acceleration exceeded for at least 3 ms (70 g) also occurred during
this time. The head injury criterion calculated during this impact was 726. The left leg had a
lower tibia bending moment of 417 Nm and a lower tibia index of 1.92. The right leg had a
lower tibia bending moment of 416 Nm, a lower tibia index of 1.93, and a foot acceleration of
157 g. The actual bending moments were higher because the A-P components exceeded the data
channel maximums.

HIC – Head Injury Criterion

HIC (Driver): 726
